LONG HISTORY
AND ONGOING TRADITIONS
Once upon a time… in about 1121 Neiderthai was first inhabited. The name originates in part from the word “THAIA” which means Alm or hut. Today you will stumble across the word throughout the Ötztal. Because of its position Niederthai was known as the “lower Alm”.
In 2010 the Ötztal dialect was added to the UNESCO list of “intangible cultural heritage in Austria”. The dialect, which has existed for around 900 years is the oldest in Austria and lives on in a unique way with between 8000 and 15000 active speakers.
Even know the local inhabitants of Niederthai generate an income from agriculture, farming, own produce and hand crafts. However this does not stop progress, technology and a modern lifestyle still find their place in this idyllic landscape – it is the combination of traditional and modern that give Niederthai its character and charm..
