Ascent to Brand and Mahdeben (2438 hm): approx. 3h, 861hm
Start on the forest road behind the hotel Falknerhof. There you have the option to choose a direct path towards Brand - if you are in a hurry. However, a more beautiful variant is to follow the forest road through the dense spruce forest and after about 1.4 km follow the signpost Ri Brand. On the steep ascent to Grastal you cross the Grastalbach, which can turn into a raging torrent when the snow melts and during storms. Across fields of alpine roses, the path leads to a memorial stone at Brand. Immediately after, a beautiful path begins across the ridge to Mahdeben. Spring cowbells line the path all the way there. Then you have earned a longer break with a beautiful view of Niederthai and the Geigenkamm and Grastaler Grieskogel.
Descent from the Mahdebene: ca. 2,5h, ca. 861hm
The Grastaler Höhenweg leads back to the Grastal and allows once again a journey through a sea of alpine roses and other beautiful dwarf shrubs. Opposite, former mudslides can still be seen on the grassy slopes. You can also start planning the next hike - because you can see the ascent to the Kreuzjöchl, over which you reach the Larstigtal. Again and again, the retreat of the Grastalferner can also be clearly identified in the landscape. Then it's a leisurely walk back to the hotel.
